The Big Decision

Well, Aaron and I have made our decision to accept The Hartford's offer and move to Hartford, CT in May 2014!

This was a really hard decision for us, and after prayerful consideration we decided that The Hartford would be best for our family. In case you don't know, Aaron is an actuary and has to take up to 8 (ridiculously hard) tests before he is considered a senior actuary. Each test takes about 300-500 hours of study time, which is the equivalent of a part-time job on top of his full-time job, or more like going through a graduate program while working full-time.

The Hartford offers:

  • Twice as many paid study hours as the other offer (3 1/2 weeks every six months), which means twice as much time to spend with family.
  • 40 hour work weeks (as compared to 50+ hour work weeks).
  • 19 paid vacation days per year.
  • Higher salary, but a higher cost of living
  • No friends or family in the area :(
As I said, the decision was really hard. We have heard so many good things about Texas and the people there, but if we moved to Houston Aaron would have very little time for family or fun. We decided it would be better for me and Sawyer if we had time to spend with Aaron rather than living close to friends and family but feeling more like a single-parent family.

  1. Having been through this situation last fall I can definitely relate! I must admit, now that we are moved, it is really hard being away from family and friends when you are raising a little man but I always try and keep an eternal perspective when I get homesick. It helps me at least :) You won't have to worry about this for a while but something to keep in mind!
