Pregnancy Thus Far

Since you have most probably heard the wonderful news, I thought I would follow-up with a post about pregnancy so far and how this all came about (G-rated version).

Aaron and I decided to wait for at least a year until starting a family, and on my birthday Aaron said that he didn't want to wait until after his internship to have a baby (I was pretty excited because I'd been baby hungry for quite a while...). We prayed about it and did some calculating of our finances and decided it was what we really wanted to do!

About a month later, I was having little cramps in my lower abdomen and I was kind of suspicious, so early Friday morning (Oct. 19) I took a pregnancy test. The test showed a very faint blue line, just enough to give me hope and disappointment at the same time. I woke up Aaron to share in my excitement/uncertainty. He smiled, gave me a big hug, and went back to bed.

Note to self: wait until grumpy Aaron has time to wake up before announcing that he is going to be a daddy.

The next day I took another test, just to put my worries to rest. The second test was positive, and Aunt Flo never paid her visit. Ooooh baby!

Here is a little summary of my first trimester, if you're interested :)

4 weeks: No symptoms yet, thank goodness! I've been buying lots of fruits and dark greens to make green smoothies. Trying to eat a balanced diet, along with my supplements. I was so excited I broke out the box of old baby clothes my mom gave me. I sifted through the cute, semi-decent clothes and put the rest in a donation bag. Later that evening Aaron tells me that he wants to look through the donation bag. A few minutes later I hear him squeal (in a manly way) as he says, "I can't believe you're giving this away, it's so cute!!" I was completely stunned. Aaron is a loving, kind person, but he has never shown interest in baby clothing, especially "cute" ones.

5 weeks: Oh my goodness, I feel like I got ran over by a freight train. Fatigue has hit me this week, and I can now be found napping in a corner using my backpack as a pillow. Luckily, my supplements have lots of B-vitamins and that helps my fatigue a lot.

6 weeks: Morning sickness. Yep. Mostly nausea and food aversions, nothing too crazy.

7 weeks: My food aversions and sense of smell have caused me to avoid the kitchen like the plague and all I want is salty junk food. So much for my dreams of eating pure health food :( even opening the fridge causes nausea, so I bought lots of frozen food at Costco and poor Aaron will have to live with less-than-satisfactory food until I can handle cooking again.

8 weeks: Mostly nausea and food aversions. Full-on puking. Really looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner... But my midwife said that morning sickness is a sign of a healthy pregnancy, so this is a blessing in disguise.

9 weeks: Baby is about the size of an olive! I just can't believe how much influence an olive-sized person has on my body. Whew! We told our families about the wee babe (since the puking was kind of obvious). We told my siblings during Thanksgiving dinner, it went a little something like this:

Me: I'm grateful for... The baby in my tummy!
Siblings: Blank stare
Me: Um, I'm pregnant...
Siblings: YAY! We knew it!
Taylor: I hope it's a boy!!! Because if it's a girl I don't want to see it. (he is my 5-year old brother)

Taylor came up to me later and said that he still wants to see the baby, even if it's a girl :)

10 weeks: Our first prenatal appointment! The midwife said that I was actually in between week 9 and 10, so we may not get to hear the heartbeat, but she would try anyway. Well, it only took a few seconds and we heard the little pitter-patter of our baby's heart! Aaron and I were on cloud nine all day long :) it doesn't feel real until you've heard the evidence of the little human being!

11 weeks: Still puking a couple times a day. It's just part of my daily routine now: Wake up, throw up, eat food, go to school/work, come home, throw up, eat food, go to sleep. Yep, that's my life. At least we know our baby is alive and kicking :) literally, it's working those little legs. I can't feel it yet, but I guess it is moving all around.

12 weeks: I haven't included any pictures because I'm still flat as a pancake :(  I was hoping I'd start growing a little bump by now, but nothing so far. I guess I'm a little too eager--I mean, for goodness sake, the baby is only the size of a plum. I can eat 10 of those without showing one bit ;)

  1. i love this! haha i love your little brothers reaction. of the days of being a kid... so midwife? you're doing an at home birth? i've been really curious about that since i've heard its much healthier and doctors tend to do risky things. can that be covered by insurance or no?

  2. Haha we laughed so hard! I wish I had a picture of his face :) that was the best part.
I am having a midwife. I'm receiving my prenatal care from a midwife here in Utah, and right now we are in the middle of finding a midwife in Seattle. Washington state requires that insurance companies cover licensed midwives and birth centers :) pretty convenient that we will be in Washington for the birth. My mom had her last 4 babies at home and it was an amazing experience. I will be having a midwife in a birthing center, and, if you are a low-risk pregnancy, it is just as safe as a hospital. Out of the 2000+ babies that my mom's midiwives deliverdc they have never lost a baby or mother.

  4. Your little brother's reaction is hilarious!! And hope that when we have a baby that I can go 12 weeks without showing--our desire is to wait as long as possible to surprise people with the news, so staying skinny would help!
